Black Friday came and went, but we didn’t go out. Every year I think about it, and every year I think better of it. Perhaps today on “Cyber Monday” I’ll do some online shopping. But probably I’ll wait until it gets closer to Christmas and hope that retailers become desperate.

Thanksgiving was a treat and I hope everyone had a nice one.

When Tracy isn’t drawing Catena, she’s coloring another comic called Luci Phurr’s Imps, which is a hilarious story about a girl who kind-of sort-of got a hold of some minions by mistake. There’s also a special guest appearance by Tracy over on a spin-off series called Behind the Imps and there’s also a book that’s coming soon. Please check out both series – they really are great.

If you’re confused as to why I often comment about games on the site, just consider it research for Hank’s next outing. Also keep in mind that it doesn’t affect the output of the comic. Tracy bears the brunt of that work – I just write, advertise, handle business issues, make deals, sell souls, and try to keep the website afloat. Ideally the site needs to split into several areas and host several comics that have been waiting to start for some time now. Ideally Catena would have a little more story too, but most of that is on hold because we spend an awful lot of time making sure we can pay the bills and then working on this as we can. It’s the best solution I have at the moment, but I have high hopes for a better one next year.

Treiss is having a ball, but I’m not so sure about Ivy. Poor Ivy – I guess she ended up with the short end of the stick, even in Miyazaki-land.

If you’re not familiar with any anime at all, Miyazaki films are a good place to start. They’re fun, they’re weird, they’re really well drawn, and they’re family friendly. My favorite is probably Spirited Away, just for all its strange spirit inhabitants.

I hope everyone is having fun with these shorts. We’re going through our favorite animes in this dream sequence as our mini-tribute to Japanese animation. We’re also out to have some fun. These anime spoofs will probably last until Christmas or so and then the dream will be over. After that I have some new stuff planned, but we’ll need to see how busy things get at the end of the year before I can promise anything. Some neat stuff is happening at Catena Comics behind the scenes and I hope to be able to tell you about it in the coming weeks. There’s actually a reason we’re doing short spoofs right now.

In gaming news, I’m still playing Fallout: New Vegas. I’m on my second run-through and this time I’m specializing in melee and unarmed. I made it all the way to Vegas by level 2, so we’ll see how this goes. Last time I had Veronica with me and she impressed me so much with her ballistic fist that I just couldn’t resist trying one out for myself. So far, so good – but man are those giant radscorpions ever ugly (and deadly) up close.

In unrelated news, I just saw this online and thought I’d share. It’s a miniature train setup in Germany that goes on and on and, well, just take a look. If I ever get to Germany, I want to see it for myself. Wow. Visiting Germany and other parts of Europe is high on my list of things to do. I’d like to see Japan, China, and a few other parts of Asia as well, but first I probably ought to learn the 27 ways to say “Where’s the bathroom?” That might take a while.

Well, we all knew that Bear wasn’t going to pick something “nice”.

If you’re not familiar with Hellsing, you can brush up with this link (or find a small clip on Youtube). Hellsing is a bit on the scary side and it’s not for kids or necessarily for viewing at work, so consider yourself warned. Like the last anime we parodied, we’re mashing Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate together.

Specifically, he’s making his appearance as a creature from this video this fellow (which is the same clip as last week).

Before I get any further I probably ought to mention that I’m not really into the sub vs. dub war. I like both, so please keep comments civil. The goal is for people to enjoy animation and have fun.

Patches-Lina’s “dragon slave” incantation can be found over here, in case you’re completely lost. If you can’t view the videos, just imagine Patches with the ability to conjure up a nuclear bomb on command. Now imagine that she does it ALL THE TIME.

In other news, I finally registered Minecraft. After reading Notch’s forums, I noticed how very much his fans expect out of an alpha product priced at $15. I got my $15 worth of enjoyment just out of the free weekend, so I figured I’d better pay up. As much as creative people like to make things, they like to live well too. Somewhere along the way somebody has to “pay the piper” or the things we like will all disappear.

Doing this comic slays me.

Hur-hur-hur.

Props go out to the crew that animated the original Slayers, because drawing all those costumes is a heck of a lot of work. I can’t imagine doing it thousands of times.

Slayers is a goofball anime series that has the distinct feel of somebody’s D&D campaign – on a lot of booze.

We like Belle as our Naga stand-in. I think Belle likes Belle as our Naga stand-in. Patches is playing, err, Not-Lina, who wields the most dangerous spell around – ever. This doesn’t seem like a good thing for Patches to have. Uh, unfortunately for Buddy, the size of her bust comes into question a lot.

If you’re not familiar with Slayers, you can check it out on Hulu, or you can visit the official Funimation site. If you’re overly familiar with Slayers, just know that we’re mashing all the series together, including the movies. These anime-inspired clips are going to move fast and furious, so hang on tight.
